days one and two (and three!)

Image
It's day eight now, I've made it to East Glacier after the most beautiful hundred miles of hiking I've ever seen. I made a friend along the way, Cory Zelenka or "Mister Z" is his trail name. He's an HVAC engineer and teacher who hiked the other two big trails in the USA, and is going for the "Triple Crown" with the CDT. We met right at the border and were assigned the same campsites all the way through. I put together a video of the first days, there were already just too many amazing pictures... https://youtu.be/lJYSpytsPjI Here are a few pictures...

thoughts just before launch..

The secret of happiness is to want what you have. Next time you are waiting in traffic, think of the glory of your car. Think of the glory that a family needs you at home. Think of how you are lending your hand to the work of the world by hurrying away on your errand. Look at all this, you have! Stop wanting, and the mountains created by your desire melt into a new sea...

Day -1: Permitting and climb of Mount Crandell

I made a video... Cheesy music and host 😅 https://youtu.be/eU-jfF3Kh8g Also, here are some pictures I'm pretty sore from the climb... The way down was a miniature hell...1000 meters descend through steep forest and then scree and rotten rock, no trail at all... The map lied! 😂

Getting In Place

The flight to Paris went well. Barbara took me to the airport in Mantra (my BerlinGo van), which she'll drive now and then to keep it healthy. She wants me to go so she has me back, and shared that I've been already away even though my body is here. She is probably right...! Head full of so many logistics, alternate plans for snow, permits, days, food stores. We watched westerns from CDT country in the last few weeks, especially liking "Lonesome Dove," that story with richly drawn characters. In Paris I say at a bar for an hour with a champion blacksmith headed to Calgary for a competition. He said he has to quickly make horseshoes to exact specifications. He and his assistant were amazed that I knew the town of Waterloo in Belgium. "You know the Ibis hotel?" Kenan asked? Turns out he and I both stayed there a lot! What a small world. I wish him luck... Good plane ride over, and my pack arrived safely. I tried to watch the John Wick movie but it was too bori

Heading back out in a few days!

Hi everyone, Well, it's time to finish the trail -- this time, heading south ("SOBO" - south bound) from Waterton, Canada into Glacier National Park, and then on to that place where I left the trail, the Seedhouse Campground about a day south of the Wyoming border in Colorado. Why am I heading back? I want to finish what I started. I may just be a guy who can't maintain enthusiasm for hiking beyond about 3 months. And that's okay with me. But it also makes sense to walk the whole line, even if it takes me twice as long as other folks. :) Blogging I had a chance to blog with TheTrek.co, which was an honor, but I decided not to, because well...I am walking alone a lot, and I end up thinking about deep things (deep to me anyway, and I might be "shallow" :D). I want to be able to write without thinking about offending people. I very much believe there is a God, and our journey through the world will bring us closer to Him if we pay attention. A lot of my th
